Evaluation of Board of Trustees Effectiveness
Please assess the full Board of Trustees on each of the following criteria.
The board understands its function as the institution’s legal body and exerts appropriate authority over the institution.
The board ensures that both the presiding officer of the board and a majority of other voting members of the board are free of any contractual, employment, personal, or familial financial interest in the institution.
The board is not controlled by a minority of board members or by organizations or institutions separate from it.
The board has developed a process for reviewing the institution’s mission.
The board regularly reviews the mission and purposes of the institution.
The board appropriately considers alignment with the College’s stated mission and vision when evaluating College policies and initiatives.
The board sets annual goals or priorities in conjunction with the CEO and monitors progress toward them.
The board meets regularly to approve substantive institutional policy and structural changes.
The board delegates policy implementation to the CEO, administration, and faculty, maintaining a clear distinction between its policy-making role and the CEO and staff’s responsibility for implementation.
The board maintains appropriate communication with the CEO and campus administrators and receives sufficient information to ensure that campus functions align with approved policies.
The board assures the fiscal stability and financial health of the college.
Board members exemplify their commitment to the college’s financial health through their personal giving and/or fundraising.
The board monitors facilities and maintenance projects to protect the college’s physical resources.
The board maintains a positive working relationship with the CEO, providing the necessary legislative and financial support for the CEO’s effective performance.
The board sets clear expectations for CEO performance and has developed appropriate evaluation processes.
CEO evaluations have been conducted as scheduled (at least every three years).
The board has clear, written standards for defining conflicts of interest and a process for evaluating member conflicts.
Disclosure statements are regularly required of all board members and are available for review.
Processes for addressing conflicts are consistently and fairly applied.
The board has well-defined standards and processes for selecting board members.
The board follows its stated procedures in selecting new members.
The board regularly engages in self-evaluation to ensure effective service.
The board has appropriate and fair processes for the dismissal of board members.
The board regularly evaluates and revises its policies and procedures, as needed and operates in a manner consistent with its policies and bylaws.
Board members vote their conscience and fully support board decisions and policies once made.
Board meetings provide sufficient information and time to explore and resolve key issues.
Board members come to each meeting prepared to participate and to discuss issues fully and openly.
Board members are appropriately involved in the life of the college; are knowledgeable of its character, activities, and community contributions; and are active in promoting the college to the wider regional and national community.
